Cumberland. Manufactured in Resin and having a Stainless backing plate, by Renamel of London from the early 60’s until 1974 when the County Boundaries of England were changed. The upper part of the Shield has three flowers representing the Parnassus Grass which grows on the marshy uplands. The lower portion of the Shield of blue and white wavy lines (barry wavy of six lines) representing the Sea, Rivers and Lakes found in the County. The Crest on top of the Shield shows a Cerlew, common to the uplands, on a Mural Crown with an Oak and Ask branch either side. Hard to see but there is a Shepherd's Crook and Pick axe in the form of a cross (Saltire) behind the Curlew, showing the importance of Coal and Sheep in the County
